SERIESous Spoilers: The Heir of Fire

seriesousspoilers
SERIESous Spoilers: A feature where we discuss what happened in our favourite (or maybe not so favourite) books. Did you like the plot changes? The romance? What surprised you? What angered you? And what do you think will happen next?

While reading The Heir of Fire, I got inspired to create a post where I actually talk about the events of the book. My reviews have no spoilers because I hate spoilers. BUT, I love talking about the books I read! Especially ongoing series where crazy things are happening (or maybe not happening) and I have no one to vent to. I don’t plan on doing this every month–it’s more of a spur of the moment, rant driven type of post.

So please vent with me! Share your theories, your likes and dislikes and more importantly, what are you looking forward to the most in the next book.

This month’s SERIESous Spoilers Pick:

Heir of Fire (Throne of Glass, #3)

The Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas  |  Throne of Glass Series

–What on earth happened to Chaol!?–

Chaol was my favourite choice for Celaena when the love triangle was proposed between him and Dorian. I love Dorian–and I loved the larger focus he had in this book, his story really captured my attention. But I felt like Celaena had a better match in Chaol.

Now I don’t think that so much…

Most, if not all, “one true pairs” go through rough patches. Especially in a series as long as this one is intended to be. It would be boring if things were always happy go lucky and I can appreciate that as a reader even if I don’t like it. But with this series, I really don’t know. I think Celaena and Chaol are really, truly over!

Or at least, I hope they are because I was super disappointed in Chaol. I really don’t think he can get past who Celaena is and I can respect that to a certain degree. I like that he is strong in his convictions, I find it rather refreshing. I just hate that I…well hate him now and I’m really struggling with that because he was a favourite character of mine.

–Thoughts on Rowan: Yay or Nay?–

I’m not totally sold on their impending romance …yet. He really reminds me of Sam–who is my actual favourite leading man for Celaena if I had to choose. (Sam was another assassin with Celaena and I loved their connection and relationship during the novellas.)

I think he has potential to be a great partner for her. They just seem to connect on all the right emotional levels when it comes to duty, fighting and life. I could easily be sold on this new romance with the right development in the next book!

–Did your heart break for Dorian or was that just me?–

Wow, was this Dorian’s story or what? I was so addicted to his story that it pushed me through this book when I found it to be dry (at times).

I was so shocked by the turn of events (I honestly didn’t see it coming with Sorcha) that I still refuse to believe it happened.

–Was anyone else reminded of Game of Thrones when reading this?–

I have no idea what was going on with Manon except that it was very Daenerys Targaryen to me, just no dragons. (Manon’s whole arc made me feel like I missed something completely in the previous novels) And those weird creatures Celaena had to fight–white-walkers anyone?

I actually felt like this entire book was very reminiscent of Game of Thrones. Not that that is a bad thing, it just took the series in yet another direction I wasn’t expecting.

What are your thoughts? Agree or disagree? What are you looking forward to the most in the next book?

  • It did seem very GoT-esque to me too! I totally agree with you on a lot of point you made, especially Chaol. In the first two books I was definitely team Chaol, and reading HoF changed my point of view on that, but it still saddens me to say that they’re probably over.
However, I don’t think Rowan and Celaena have an impending romance just because I feel like Maas has to sort out the Chaol/Dorian stuff first. Plus, Rowan just seems more like a good friend, which Celaena needs.
I can’t believe Queen of Shadows is coming so soon! I suppose we’ll just have to wait and see to find out about Chaol!

    • You know, I really didn’t think Rowan was being set up as a romance interest until I was reading some fangirling on Goodreads and in some reviews. I know that they have that mystical magic bond but I didn’t think it was anything romantic when I was first reading it. Now, I’m starting to second guess myself. I think I see it more as a slow burn romance and maybe something that will be more evident in the later books, maybe even the last.

I’m sad that the Chaol romance is over but I also like that it is too? I’m all for happy endings but I like the darker edge it gives the series if they don’t end up together…in some twisted way of mine :p

      Thanks for commenting!

  • I totally agree on Chaol, I don’t really want him and Celeana to get together. I really don’t see how they can now. I like Rowan but I hope she doesn’t go in a romance direction with those two, I like them as friends and I think Celeana really needs a friend right now. I love Dorian!!!! He’s grown on me so much, especially in this book. I am so nervous for the next book for him though! I like Manon and the witches, but agree that they felt a little out of place in this book. Hopefully they are tied into the main storyline in QOS. I love this idea! I always struggle so much to keep my reviews spoiler free!

    • Thanks! It felt really good to let out my venting all at once haha Sometimes I slip and put in a little mini rant-y spoiler but I couldn’t do it with this book.

I agree, I like the friendship of Rowan and Celaena more than a potential romance. I’m always for more platonic romances in YA.

When it comes to Manon, I totally thought I missed something in the last book! By the end I was starting to see where they would come into play but I really hope it gets elaborated on in the next book!

  • Ohh I never thought that Heir of Fire was like Game of Thrones! But now that you draw up the similarities, it does sound like it shadows GoT a bit. To be honest though, I still don’t think of this series as anything like GoT.

I’m a little confused as to where the romance will go with Celaena and Chaol, but I do feel like they will end up together eventually. Even though I’m now on Team Rowan. Like actually would love it if her and Rowan would end up together! There’s a lot of chemistry there. More than there ever was with Chaol in my opinion. However, I highly doubt Celaena will end up with Rowan, I feel like Rowan is in love with Celaena however she isn’t in love with him 🙁

I am so excited for Queen of Shadows! I want it nowwww.

I love how this series has progressed! It just gets better and better with each book!

    • I agree, this series isn’t anything like GoT but they definitely share some similar fantasy elements–elements that I didn’t really notice when I read Crown of Midnight.

I find it interesting you say that Rowan is the one with the unrequited love, because I think it is the complete opposite. Now, I don’t think Celaena is passionately in love with Rowan but I think she has deeper feelings than Rowan–but perhaps that is just a product of getting her POV most of the time. I agree that they have great chemistry though and I think he is a much better match in theory than Chaol…especially now with the way Chaol’s character is developing.

I can’t wait for Queen of Shadows! I think some great things are in store for all these characters 🙂

  • This post is brilliant – I love the book discussion feel that you just can’t get with regular book reviews. I agree that Dorian’s story is what kept me involved in the book (plus the bits involving dragons!), and felt really, really upset with how things ended for him and Sorcha. Just rip out my heart, Sarah Maas.
I was also disappointed with Choal and honestly think no love interest has matched her since Sam. I’m not sad to see the story progressed beyond their relationship, however, because I thought it was getting a bit tiresome.
I admit I don’t like this series nearly as much as most people – I don’t find anything about Celaena relatable and think her decision-making is often nonlogical and sporadic. That’s just me though 🙂
But the dragons! If I do continue on it will be to read more about the storyline involving them. 🙂

    • Thank you!

Man…I was reading that whole bit with Sorcha at the end and kept saying to myself “please don’t kill her please don’t kill her” and then…sigh. I shed a tear or two. Definitely the most memorable moment of the novel!

You bring up a good point with Chaol. There really is only so far that a relationship can go in a longer series like this. They are either together or they aren’t and I think I like this development going forward.

I think Celaena is a hard character to relate to so you are not alone.. I definitely sympathize with her given her past (reading the novels really helped me respect her character in that sense) but she isn`t my favourite heroine ever (especially with some of the decisions she has been making lately).
