Monthly Inventory: August 2015

August 2015

GAH! The end of August means school is just around the corner! That means less reading time–well, in theory; rarely in practice. While I didn’t officially participate in ARC August, I did read a lot of ARCs and requests which was a lot of fun. I also did a great job with my Tackling the TBR Challenge for July and August. More details about that will be posted in a few weeks but I was really happy with where I ended things this month.

But enough about the month ahead! Let’s focus on the Awesome month that was August.

I was a bad, bad girl this month! I bought books :O But in my defence, they all cost $1 (except 3 but I got them for 50% off!) and most were to complete series I already had. I’ve promised myself no more next month!

The big news is I finished my Goodreads Challenge. YIKES! Guess I seriously underestimated my reading time this year! And after a two month hiatus, I finally got a few keywords in for my Monthly Keyword Challenge! Now my focus is on Tackling my TBR and reading more Canadian Authors. A classic or two wouldn’t hurt either.

readathons

I participated in my second readathon, the You’re Excused to Read Readathon. My goal was to read 7 books in the span of a week. And I’m happy to say that I did! They weren’t the books I had initially selected but, hey, it’s 7 books! Full details here.

  • Nothing really happened this month…oops
  • I suppose that I’ve decided to post my updated book reviews to Goodreads is news
    • normally I just post my review of the first book of a series with a link on Goodreads but from now on I’m going to post my review of books I read in ongoing/personally incomplete series to Goodreads since they are basically individual reviews of that book and not the series.

thoughts

  • Update the following:
    • review directories
    • Series Recaps for S-Z
      • adding the recap button to previously posted reviews
  • I’m thinking about offering to do graphics for other blogs as a side hobby
    • I would have some logistic kinks to work out but I love graphics design and think it would give me something else to do when I’m not in class, reading or blogging. Stay tuned for more info!
  • Trilogy Termination novels will be read — more details to come!
  • Blogging 101 guide – have the basics out, now to actually write it!

Last September I went to see The Weeknd on a whim and I have to say, I am loving his latest singles! I Can’t Feel my Face and The Hills have been playing nonstop at my place! I also saw 5 Seconds of Summer in concert so She’s Kinda Hot has been my jam these last few weeks 😛

Monthly Inventory: July 2015

July 2015

July was a busy month! As you may or may not know, the Pan American Games were held in my native country, Canada and more specifically they were near my hometown so I just had to partake in the events! They were a lot of fun to attend and I was able to cross off some items on my bucket list (like attend a major sporting event, watch diving live and attend a Team Canada Women’s Soccer Game). When I wasn’t at the Games, I was blogging and watching highlights on the the TV (as limited as they were). I’m a huge Team Canada fan and I was so proud of all our athletes <3

But I also participated in my first readathon, #MakeMeRead It as well as a second one, Excuse to Readathon! They were/are (as the Excuse to Read is still going on) a lot of fun and I will definitely be participating in more in the future! Especially now that I have Twitter!

I didn’t purchase any NEW books as per my Tackling the TBR goals. Though I really should have bought that Cora Carmack book (Inspire) when it was on sale!

I did win some giveaways–for once!–though so I added a few books to my shelves 🙂 Many thanks Simon & Schuster Canada & Lola @Hit or Miss Books

Chasing River (Burying Water, #3) Vengeance Road The Cage (The Cage, #1) Brutal Youth A Bedtime Story (The BTS Trilogy, #1)

And, I had some book series that I needed to complete so I also bought these books when I discovered Bookoutlet.com! (A bad thing to discover I think)

The Unfailing Light (Katerina, #2) The Morning Star (Katerina, #3) Are These My Basoomas I See Before Me? (Confessions of Georgia Nicolson, #10) Then He Ate My Boy Entrancers (Confessions of Georgia Nicolson, #6)

I’m getting closer to my Goodreads goal a LOT faster than I expected! I thought with my new school program that I would have less time to read this year but apparently that isn’t the case. I honestly should have known better given last year’s 180% completion rate but I really didn’t think I would have a chance to read so much! But hey, reading too much is rarely a bad thing.

Though for someone who reads so much, I’m not doing an excellent job of completing my various challenges…

Everything YA Challenge: Mini Challenge + ✔ 2 YA reads
Goodreads Challenge: 18 books added (I’m 96% complete! I totally underestimated…)
Monthly Key Word Challenge:  No words added
Prequel & Sequel Challenge: +30 points added (Goal 2 surpassed; new goal set!)

readathons

I participated in this readathon from July 20th – July 27th. It was my very first readathon and I had so much fun that I decided to do another one immediately after (The Excuse to Read–see below!)!

My Goal with this one was to read 5 of the 10 books you all voted for. I’m happy to say that I was able to do that: sneaking in a book within the last few hours to get 6/10. These were all TBRs I had on my Kobo (plus one on my Kindle) so I was really satisfied with this result!

Love, Rosie Lady Thief (Scarlet, #2) Before You (Sex on the Beach) Near and Far (Lost and Found, #2) The Mad Tatter Torrent (Condemned, #1)

Thank you to everyone who voted for those books! You did good 😉

My second readathon is the You’re Excused to Read Readathon. It worked out perfectly that this one started when the previous one ended PLUS I have a long weekend coming up, thus giving me an excuse to not do anything but sit outside and read. Details can be seen here but my goal is to read 7 books and so far I’ve read 2!

TBRupdate

This is going to be a brief update considering I had a post dedicated to this topic earlier this month and I’ll be doing a full summary in September.

BUT I just had to share the awesome news that I only have 8 book on hold at the library! Now that may seem like a lot to some people but prior to my self-imposed restrictions in May, I had more than 30 books on hold at the library! So this is great news and means I am right on track with my Tackling the TBR goals! I feel so accomplished!

Awards: Real Neat Blog Award

book

Thank you to Yoyo @ willyoutalknerdytome for the The Real Neat Blog Award nomination. I know you nominated me forever ago and I apologize for taking so long! I have so much fun reading your blog and just want to let you know that I will talk nerdy with you any day of the week 😉 I can’t wait to read more of your future posts and wish you and your blog all the best!!!

7 Questions:

1. If you can chose to be friends with any superhero, who would it be?

This is super tough! I am a huge super hero fan! Any of the X-men would be sick (Storm or Rogue or Gambit would be my ideals…oh and Wolverine of course!). I also would love to meet The Flash and The Arrow…especially on their TV show.

2. What is in your bag/purse/backpack/book bag?

Too many things in my purse. I have lip chap, lotion, my rain jacket (it’s a pocket folding one that’s how), my Kobo, glasses cleaner and a pen. Plus random things I probably don’t even know are in there.

3. If you only have 1 year to live, how would you spend your last year?

It’s your typical cliche answer of travel. I would also spend time with family and friends.

4.If you could only stop one of these event: racism, sexism, rape, body-shaming, homophobia. Which one would you pick and why? (I hope this make sense. I thought of this in the shower so…)

This one is super tough! I really can’t pick all of them!?

I think sexism because it also helps stop body-shaming. It kills me that we (as in North America where I live) is so technologically advanced yet we still have such stereotypes for men and women, lower pay for women and feel like we can dictate what people can and can’t do to their bodies based on their sex. Drives me nuts!

5. Do you believe in horoscope and what is your sign?

I don’t believe in horoscopes in the sense that they predict the future. I believe that people see the connections that they want to see when they read it. But, I definitely like to read mine for fun 😉

6. Current Read and Last Read

I’m currently reading Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo. The last book I read was Bad Reputation by K.B. Nelson.

7. What you want to study in Uni/ College?

I finished my undergraduate degree in Biomedical Science (but I had an English Minor ;)) and I am currently in school studying Medical Laboratory Science.

***

My Nominees:

I have to do a MASSIVE award tagging in the near future so be prepared folks!

My Questions for my Future Nominees:
  1. What genre/theme is your current reading obsession?
  2. What character (novel or other) do you love to hate?
  3. Reality TV or Dramatic Show?
  4. What’s one talent you wish you had?
  5. What is your favourite social media platform?
  6. Where is your favourite place to read?
  7. What is your blog’s favourite feature/meme?

***

Rules:

  1. Put the award logo on your blog.
  2. Answer 7 questions asked by the person who nominated you.
  3. Thank the people who nominated you, linking to their blog.
  4. Nominate any number of bloggers you like, linking to their blogs.

tackling

Just a brief update on my crusade to tackle my TBR list this summer. You can find part 1 of my plan in my original post here, but the basic idea is to read some of the books I’ve purchased over the years. For the months of May and June, I created four rules that I hope will get me to a place where I can read mostly purchased novels. Here’s how I’m doing in the week since I created the post:

  1. No more putting books on hold at the library!
    • I was actually really successful at this! I only put one book on hold, but it’s Katie McGarry’s latest (Nowhere But Here) and I’ve been dying to read it so I let myself cheat on that one 😉
    • I also staggered my suspended holds so that they don’t all come in at once.
    • I kinda goofed with putting the Grisha Trilogy on hold at my local library this month because they became available much quicker than I expected–however, this has been on my TBR for YEARS so I’m not going to make it a negative thing rather a positive
  2. No more buying books!
    • The books above that I listed as May purchases were made earlier in the month so they don’t really count 😉 I’ve thought about buying a book here or there because they were only $1 but I haven’t pressed the purchased button yet!
    • No joke, as soon as I posted my plan, Kobo came out with another contest period which means promo codes for discounts! I don’t plan on buying anything unless I get a really great promo code (30%+) and so far I’ve only got one 30% so it doesn’t look like it’s going to be so bad!
  3. No grabbing freebies!
    • I’ve been pretty good though I definitely picked up one today. I’ve stopped browsing the bestseller list and have just been going by my book sale email subscriptions so it seems to be working! But I’m definitely going to pay more attention to this in the coming weeks!
  4. Read at least one book from my TBR Jar a week!
    • That definitely didn’t happen this past week! Work and catching up with friends and family took priority so I really didn’t have a chance.
    • I also have a ton of eBooks out from the library that need to be read before they expire next week so I don’t think I will be meeting this goal for another two weeks.

thoughts

  • Recently updated reviews will be noted on the side menu. If you hover over the cover you can see what date the review was updated
    • I’ve decided to add Conclusion cards to older reviews when they are updated.
  • I haven’t posted a Toonie Tuesday post in forever, so I think that feature/review theme is on the kaputs! It’s so hard to find books for $2 (most I get are because of a coupon & prices are always fluctuating)
    • Plus, I’ve been doing the Top Ten Tuesday Memes and I think that’s a great feature to continue 😉
  • I’m contemplating getting Twitter and/or Tumblr for my blog
  • Posted my first Netgalley reviews! I’m loving this review outlet so far!
  • Non-review features will be limited to 1 type per week (in most cases)
    • It can become so overwhelming to do each meme feature every week and I felt like they were slightly taking away from the purpose of my blog

thoughts

  • I think I’m going to create a book discussion feature that will be more of a seasonal/whenever I feel like it type of post. It’s going to be a bit of a rant driven post about an individual book 😉
  • Update the following:
    • review directories
    • Series Recaps for G-L — I SWEAR it’s going to get done!
  • Possibly Twitter or Tumblr
  • Participate in Booking Through Thursdays meme
  • Finish some blogger tags and award tags (thanks everyone!)

I thought this was a bit of overkill considering I have pages that I update on a regular basis (plus the tables didn’t format well when reading on an app). You can view my specific progress by visiting my dedicated Reading Challenge Page here.

Because I am finished school, I decided to try a Spring Bingo Challenge and signed up for Great Imagination’s Ready for Spring 2015 Bingo. I also decided to sign up for Bookmark to Blog’s Monthly Word Challenge and added a Canadian Bingo Card (from Retreat by Random House) for the rest of the year!

Book Bingo–Canadian: 0 books added
Bookish Bingo–Ready for Spring: 4 books added
Everything YA Challenge: ✔ Mini Challenge + ✔ 2 YA reads
Goodreads Challenge: 25 books added
Monthly Key Word Challenge: ✔ “The” & “Prince”
Prequel & Sequel Challenge: +13 points added
SERIESous’ Personal Classics Challenge: 0 books added
SERIESous’ Personal Nonfiction Challenge: 0 books added

The idea behind the feature is to pit two books (or other themes) that are always compared to each other in a battle of three rounds to see who the winner is. Of course it is completely subjective to my own opinions so I added a poll feature to get your take on everything. Thanks to those who participated!

This month’s final poll results:

Twilight Saga 4 | Vampire Diaries Series 2

Next Battle: Vampire Diaries Books vs Vampire Diaries TV Show

  • New Theme and colour scheme added!
    • Changed the main menu options at the top
    • Moved sidebar options around (have footer menus now!)
  • Also added headers to reviews (subheadings will launch next month)
  • changed the features of my monthly review
  • added social media links
    • Joined Riffle (it’s a book cataloguing system like GoodReads but allows you to create individual lists and generally recommend books). I mostly use it for lists.
    • Also joined Bloglovin’!
  • Signed up for Netgalley!

thoughts

  • Review subheadings will make an appearance
    • I had already written some of the reviews for May before I decided to add Subheadings and didn’t feel the need to change all of them. So some posts will have them but not all will
  • Update the following:
    • review directories
    • Series Recaps for G-L (I swear I am going to get around to this!)
  • A new SEASONAL feature
    • I am also going to cut down on the number of non-review posts to one a week
  • This May I’m going a Purchase Purge where I’m only reading books that I’ve bought (ie no books from the library) and I hope to do a review blitz sometime this summer with those reviews
    • I’m also going to do a Trilogy Termination Blitz sometime this summer where I finish some trilogies I started years ago but never got around to finishing.
    • I also want to try and NOT put any more books on hold at the library.

thoughts

At the start of the month I was rotating through Lady Gaga, Maroon 5 (saw them in concert in March!) and the 50 Shades of Grey Soundtrack (say what you will about the movie, the music is FANTASTIC!). Exams are always a tricky time and I normally find my new music obsession. This time around it was Rixton, specifically Hotel Ceiling (watch the crazy video!) and Ed Sheeran (who I’m seeing in June!). But my study jam (I can’t have music playing with words or else I do karaoke by myself) is Tchaikovsky 😉

Site Update: 2 Year Anniversary!

2anniversary

I can’t believe it’s been two years since I started this blog! At times, it feels a lot longer than that but other times it just seems like yesterday!

First and foremost, I want to thank everyone for reading my blog, nominating me for various awards, reblogging my posts and so much more! It’s been a lot of fun and it’s been great connecting to fellow book-lovers! I can’t wait to see what is in store in the year(s) to come!

Some Fun Facts about my blog:

With a “new year” in my blogging “career” just about to start, I decided it was time to revamp some other stuff on my site!

New Home & Blog Feed Page!

This is really important! When you go to my domain, instead of my blog feed you will see that what used to be my sticky post is now a page explaining the concept of my blog. Recently updated series will no longer be listed as a sticky post but as an image widget on my sidebar. I now have a separate blog post feed page on my top toolbar (aptly named “Blog”).

When you click on my Blog Feed Page you will see a new sticky that has some links to help you better find the series, standalone or guide that you want. Below that will be my most recent posts. Of course my directories are still on my top toolbar and the search is still on the sidebar, but this seems more logical for navigation.

Some Other new thingS:

-The new blog design/colour theme-

One thing I really wanted to do was change the colour scheme of my blog. I was tired of the orange and pink and I found the text was hard to read at times (so I don’t know how all you folks could manage!). So, while I was procrastinating from studying near the end of the March, I started to work on redesigning my site.

I immediately fell in love with the purple colour scheme of the Babylog theme but discovered that I couldn’t hide all the baby things so I continued my search and I found the Sela theme. I’m so happy that I did because I like it so much better than the Babylog theme and love the customization I can play around with.

-the revamped Review format-

But that isn’t the only thing I have changed! I have also tweaked my review format! You’ll see the official new format in the next few days/months (or you can check out my review of The Book Thief for an idea) but I’ll give a brief overview of what I have changed (besides adding new colourful headers).

  • Source & Format — I’ve included where I get my books and what format I read. Because the number of pages differs in an eBook versus a physical book, I realized that when I say something lasted “50 pages” it might have been a different number in the other format (ie it really wasn’t 50 pages but 30 etc).
  • My Conclusion — I thought my conclusion was a little vague so I’ve included some more specific breakdowns to help you decide if the series/book is worth your time
    • An actual conclusion! — I realized I never gave one definitive response to the review so I created some fun images that I think summarize everything neatly into one statement. (You can see all 10 images here on my new guide!)
    • Overall — this is where my previously titled “conclusion” will be. It’s just my final thoughts of my review; usually explaining why I picked the statement I picked for that review
    • Read if you like/Avoid if you (dislike) — here I will give specific themes that I think help you determine if you should read or not read a book/series
  • I also moved the synopsis up to the top of the page for Series Reviews–it makes more sense that you read what the book/series is about before you read my review; especially since covers/titles vary by countries!
  • I’ve decided to break down my reviews into various subheadings. That way you can get the details on what you want to know instead of searching through my review 😉 *This you’ll see in June and with the occasional post in May*

**I won’t be going back to alter my all previously posted reviews with this new format. There are just too many of them! However, if a series is to be updated (ex. Fresh Friday, I read a new book in the series, or it is now a series, etc) I will probably tweak them a bit to reflect this new format.

-Blog button-

Also, I created a button if you like to collect these sort of things. I’m planning on having a blog roll feed with everyone else’s buttons but I haven’t got around to creating its permanent home yet 🙂

-*new* my guide to reading more!-

In honour of my 2 year anniversary, I’m really excited to launch my new guide on How to Read MORE books. I read a ton of books (as my Goodreads account shows) and I’m always asked how I do, so I decided to post some tips on what I do to fit more reading time in! I hope you like it!

So I hope you like all my big and little changes!

Working on my blog is my number 1 goal for this summer and I can’t wait to take it to the next level! I’m into blogging more than I ever was and I’m so excited to share all my reviews with everyone (and boy do I have a lot to share over the next month!).

Thank you again!

Feedback Needed! How do you like to read series reviews?

Hi everyone!

I just want to get some feedback about my review format! I really would appreciate your comments and please be as critical as possible! I promise you won’t hurt my feelings!

My blog’s two year anniversary (yay!) is at the end of the month and I’ve decided to reformat (slightly) how I write my reviews.

So far I’ve decided to include specific image card “conclusions” at the end of my posts that summarize my thoughts on a series as well “Read if You Like/ Avoid if You” statements. (This will be available for reviews posted in May onwards). I was reading over my reviews and I found that I never really stated whether or not you should actually read the series–and while reading is completely subjective sometimes it helps to have a definitive answer. (You can see what I am talking about here)

But what I’m looking to get some input for is how my actual review is written.

Right now, I breakdown the stats for the book/series–and I plan on keeping that–and then I do a thoughts section where I explain why liked or why I didn’t like a series. For series, I try to flow through the series in the order of publication. I write a little bit on book 1, then 2 and so on.  (See an example here)

What I want to know: is that general thoughts section helpful?

Would it be more helpful for you as a reader to have a more broken down review with some subheadings?

For example (and these are subject to change):

  • My expectations for the book/why I picked it up
  • My thoughts on the Plot
  • My thoughts on the Characters
  • My Thoughts on the Romance (if applicable)
  • My Expectations for the rest of the series (if applicable)

And then end with a general conclusion?

So what type of review format would be more helpful for you when deciding to read a series:

1) a general review of each book without subheadings? or

2) specific subheadings that highlight aspects of the book and me commenting on those aspects?

Any comments and/or suggestions would be appreciated! I write these reviews for my readers so I want to make sure they are meeting the needs of book lovers! Thank you!
