Blog Tour: Off the Ice (Breakaway #4) by L P Dover

Synopsis for Off the Ice (from Goodreads):

He’s always made the scoring plays, both on and off the ice, but this time he has a new goal … the one for Meghan’s heart.

I’m Justin Davis, all-star center for the Charlotte Strikers. For years, I chased the spotlight, not only with hockey, but through television as well. That’s why I decided to play the bachelor on Rich and Single. Unfortunately, I was stuck with a fake fiancée from hell who I couldn’t stand to be around. Now that our contract is up, I’m allowed to do whatever I want, with whoever I want. I plan to take full advantage of my newfound freedom.

After being on the show, people don’t recognize me for hockey anymore, even with just winning the Stanley Cup for my team. That’s why I’m spending the off season in a remote cabin in Wyoming where the chances of people knowing me are slim. Space is what I need, but when a down to earth beauty needs help on her ranch, I can’t resist. Meghan Taylor is exactly what I’ve been looking for, even though I’m not the kind of man she wants.

Getting her to see the real me has its challenges, but the more time I spend with her, the easier it is for her to see that I’m not the same guy she knows from TV. Being away from the media is one thing, but as soon as I’m back in the spotlight, I’m afraid it’ll change what we have. I don’t want to lose her, but I also can’t hide away in Wyoming forever. It’s a choice I’m not ready to make.

thoughts

Why I Picked it Up / My Expectations:

I randomly stumbled upon this series earlier this year when I picked up a review copy of book #3, Playmaker. I then backtracked the rest of the series because I loved this great cast of characters. Also, each book has its own unique take on the romance novel so always know I’m going to get something fresh in the next book.

I actually thought book #3 was the last–but I’m so happy it wasn’t because I really wanted Justin’s story! So I was eager to dig in and wrap up this world.

The Plot:

To me, this was a very character driven story. Justin has been a side character throughout the series so it was great to get that insight into him. And I really loved Meghan and her story.

As for the drama: it surprised me as well. There were quite a few things at play and that kept me on my toes, eager to see what would happen next. Somethings wrap up a little too quickly for my taste but I liked how they were handled (ie communication) so I didn’t mind in the end.

The Characters:

Like I said above, I really liked these characters! They were well developed and just genuine people so you can’t help but like them.

The Romance:

I’m not a fan of insta-love and that is an aspect of other novels in the series that I didn’t particularly enjoy. However, that wasn’t the case here. These two spend a lot of time talking and getting to know each other so I got where these feelings were coming from.

Read my review of the rest of the series!

Blog Tour: Cross Drop (On the Edge #2) by Elizabeth Hartey

Series Review: Is this series worth your time? Does it get better as the novels progress? Or does it get worse? Find out below:

Synopsis for Cross Drop (from Goodreads):

Nikki

I’m not a saint. Never claimed to be. I’ve played the game and scored my fair share—both on and off the field. This is why I should have known better than to fall for a hockey player. But I did. I fell fast and hard.
Now I’m left with the painful consequences, reminded every day of how reckless I had been by giving him my heart so easily—so willingly. Dalt broke me in the cruelest of ways, and because of him I’ll never be able to love again.

Dalt

Nikki changed me. She made me want to be a better man. My days playing off the field were over because she owned every little piece of my heart…until she left, leaving behind a gnawing ache where my heart used to be.
Now she’s back, and it’s painfully clear she hates me, ignoring me, pretending like I’m nobody to her. But that’s just too damn bad. I want answers. I want a goddamn explanation.
And most of all…I want her..

thoughts

Why I Picked it Up / My Expectations:

After all the little hints we got about Nikki and Dalt in Cross Stroke, I couldn’t wait to get to the bottom of their troubled past. Why were two people who were so obviously in love now at odds?

What I Liked:

–Explosive Chemistry–

Nikki and Dalt have explosive chemistry right from the start. And I loved that we got those first few chapters dedicated to the earlier parts of their relationship. It really built up the fact that these two had a strong connection and love early on…so it made it all that more heart-wrenching when you see how far apart they’ve grown.

–Great Characters–

Unlike my experience with the last novel, I had no problem connecting with these two as characters. I think they have enough going on to develop them as characters but not overwhelm them either. They have their layers and their complications but it never seemed like too much.

Perhaps it helped that we were introduced to them in the first book so you know what to expect a little more?

What I Didn’t Like:

–The Drama Near the End–

As for the drama of the situation, I enjoyed it. The situation that kept them apart was a little frustrating to learn about at the start but once the characters developed a little more and their insecurities and such were revealed, it made sense to me.

I personally would have preferred a different direction at the end (I wanted a different approach) but I understand why it was added to the story.

Elizabeth Hartey

As a lover of the northeast US, Elizabeth moved with her husband to the Poconos several years ago to open a Chiropractic Clinic. Four children and a menagerie of animals later, she has finally found time to fulfill her lifelong dream of writing novels. The wild ride of writing books is one of the most difficult things she’s ever done in her life. But the opportunity to get her stories out of her head and down on paper and send them out into the world is also one of the most wonderful things she’s ever done. A dreamer at heart, romance is the genre she spends most of her time writing and reading into the wee hours of the morning. And having readers fall in love with her characters as much as she does is almost as exciting as giving birth (just not as painful!) When not juggling work responsibilities and writing, she enjoys spending time with her family, hiking the beautiful hills and woods around her home, swimming, knitting, watching old classic movies and travelling. As an avid hockey fan she has to compromise with her husband—one night of hockey for her in exchange for a night of football for him.

Synopsis for Cross Stroke (from Goodreads):

Tracey…

One night left my heart shattered and my reputation ruined, and now my only hope is to transfer to another university far from home. Although I’m a champion figure skater and am used to succeeding, I can’t dump the burden of distrust and intimacy I’m carrying.

But when I literally crash into the cocky captain of the hockey team, sparks fly, and the attraction is as undeniable as it is unwanted.

No way is this arrogant hottie the one to help me move past my fears. Or is he…?

Dak…

Overwhelmed with guilt and remorse, I can’t forget the tragic accident that killed my first love. To avoid ever feeling that kind of agonizing loss again, I vow to stick with one-night stands with every puck bunny who glides my way and focus on keeping my position on the hockey team.

But after I meet a feisty figure skater and am then thrown together with her as a lab partner, I find I want to melt the icy walls we’ve built around our hearts.

If we don’t strangle each other first.

thoughts

**This post was originally posted as a Blog Tour review of the first book of the series. It has now been updated to include the newest publications in the series.**

Why I Picked it Up / My Expectations:

I love a good sports romance. I especially love the romances that have a “hate to love you” vibe to them. And throw in the “lab partner” trope and you have me sold! I was really excited to glide (see what I did there?) into Dak and Tracey’s story about learning to love again with someone you least expect.

The Plot:

I really enjoyed the start because these two just kept running into each other much to Tracey’s dismay. But near the middle of the book, the pacing just got a little weird for me. That was around the time their relationship becomes more physical and the rest of the story takes a backseat. But it definitely won me over by the end again.

The Characters:

I loved Dakota immediately. He was so adorable in his attraction to Tracey. And the whole mix up at the start was fun to read. I wish it was strung out a little further because it was entertaining to read. But I also liked his backstory and how scared he was to truly care about someone again.

Tracey I had a harder time getting a read on. She has quite the backstory, so rightfully so, she’s a bit of a mess. But I found her character to be all over the place. I’m not sure if she had maybe too much on her plate and that overwhelmed her as a character. Nevertheless, she really does have some great development though near the end so I appreciated that.

The Romance:

One of the really noteworthy things about these two was their communication. I loved how these two talked about their past and put everything out there early on. It helped cement a relationship of understanding to build their relationship on. However, I needed to see more of that emotional connection in the middle of the book. By that point, the focus shifts to their physical chemistry and I wanted to see that friendship/emotional connection grow more. There’s no denying the heated chemistry between these two but I loved those moments of reflection and discussion we saw earlier in the book.

My Expectations for the Rest of the Series:

I am very, very excited for Nikki’s book and seeing the rest the boys get their stories!

updates

–June 11, 2018– Book #2: Cross Drop

Check out my full review here as a part of my Blog Tour hosting stop for this release!

–December 20, 2019– Book #3: Cross Crease

I made reading this book a priority when I resubscribed to Kindle Unlimited. I was so excited to get this slightly forbidden romance since it’s been brewing since the first book.

Honestly, after Chapter 11, I skipped all the chapters and just read the last chapter and epilogue. This book was a huge disappointment for me.

It all just seemed so shallow because all it seemed like these two cared about was banging each other. I got so tired of hearing Heaven moan about her virginity and how she wanted Wolfe to be the one to take it. But her reasoning seemed to be because he was hot and not because of who he was as a person. I think their BFF status was established behind the scenes and didn’t translate to the scenes we got.

I wanted something deeper, like the other two books in the series.

My Rating: 3/5

Cross Stroke 3/5 | Cross Drop 4/5 | Cross Crease 2/5

overall
I think fans of sports romances who want to dive into the world of New Adult will enjoy this take. Some books are stronger than others at delivering a solid romance read.

Blog Tour: You’ve Got Fail by Celia Aaron

Synopsis for You’ve Got Fail (from Goodreads):

A romantic comedy from Celia Aaron.

I single-handedly built the hottest website for dating and relationship advice. Got a question? Scarlet Rocket can answer it for you. I was your modern day agony aunt with the solutions to all your pesky personal problems. The only issue? I was actually a man named Willis Halloran, not the female Scarlet Rocket. I thought my secret was safe. But then a sexy con artist calling herself Scarlet Rocket began showing up at society events, pretending to be me. I couldn’t let it go, so I tracked her down and confronted her. It went well … except for the part where she stole my wallet. Oh, and the part where she conned my agent into having us work together. And after that? Let’s just say she wound up stealing something much more valuable than my wallet or my [fake] name.

thoughts

Why I Picked it Up / My Expectations:

The title for this book is what first drew me in and then I read the synopsis and just had to investigate further. Finding entertaining and humourous romantic comedies has been hard for me in the past so I’m always willing to try one out. The whole premise of this one reminded me a lot of a rom-com movie so I was excited to meet some fun characters and enjoy all the silly hi-jinx that ensued when they finally meet.

The Plot:

I’ll admit that it took me a few chapters to get past the logic of the story. I mean, the whole premise is that Scarlet Rocket weasels her way into a gig with Willis’ agent much to his dismay. In the real world, Willis could get her to stop simply by suing her for essentially stealing his intellectual property and the book would be of a different story entirely. So once I let that legal logic go away, I had a blast reading this story.

This book is always moving. You’ve got Willis’ story about building up his business with his new book release and fighting his feelings for the redhead. You’ve said got said Redhead with her own secrets and feelings that slowly get revealed the more you read. Then you have the scenes together that are as equally sweet as they are heated and the drama of their publicized partnership. I never had a dull moment reading this.

The Characters:

All the characters we meet in this book have such infectious personalities. From our leads to their friends and family, I was immediately drawn in by their charm.

It’s their wit and humour that impressed me the most. I laughed a lot during this book thanks to the antics that ensue and the various character personalities. Some of the stuff is a little quirky but it’s not that “weird quirky” you know what I mean? It’s quirky in an entertaining way not in an eccentric way that is off-putting or has you confused.

The Romance:

While I loved Willis and Scarlet together, I wish their romance had a little more substance to it. They have this great attraction to each other right from the start that brings this delicious tension to all their scenes together. However, I feel like the emotional connection doesn’t get as deep as I wanted it to. Their relationship is definitely more than a physical attraction–it was always obvious to me why they would be a great pair since I knew who they were individually–but I just wanted a few more scenes of them talking and establishing that stronger connection rather than them just sleeping together and getting this unspoken bond.

My Rating: 4/5

overall
If you’re looking for a fun and steamy romantic comedy, I can’t recommend this book enough!
