Synopsis for Of Poseidon (from Goodreads):

Galen is the prince of the Syrena, sent to land to find a girl he’s heard can communicate with fish. Emma is on vacation at the beach. When she runs into Galen—literally, ouch!—both teens sense a connection. But it will take several encounters, including a deadly one with a shark, for Galen to be convinced of Emma’s gifts. Now, if he can only convince Emma that she holds the key to his kingdom…

Told from both Emma and Galen’s points of view, here is a fish-out-of-water story that sparkles with intrigue, humor, and waves of romance.

thoughts

Why I Picked it Up / My Expectations:

I’ve had Of Poseidon on my TBR for YEARS. It escaped numerous declutterings of my TBR because there was just something about it that made me want to read it, even years later. I think part of it is that I just never really read a lot of mermaid books. The other part was that this book seemed to be everywhere when I first started blogging and I think I felt like I was missing out on something.

When the trilogy became available on audio at my library, I knew it was the next one for me to binge!

The Concept / The World:

The whole world is really intriguing. It’s a fun play on mythology and other mermaid tales.

The Plot:

Even as I get older, I still enjoy YA reads. I just get a little chooser about what I read because I know what I like and what I don’t like.

This is one of those series I might have enjoyed a little more 10 years ago when it first came out.
I craved a little more excited but perhaps that was because I could see the plot twists a mile away. However, I did think the pacing was good and these books were always moving so they never felt like they dragged on. They’re very basic in their approach and I feel like with the politics of the world, more things could have been going on to give the story an edge.

The Characters:

Emma is the classic “special snowflake” heroine with a massive chip on her shoulder to make her (unnecessarily) angsty. I wasn’t a fan. Her rationale for some of her decisions made me roll my eyes considering she is supposed to be 18 and “mature”.

Galen won’t be winning my teenaged heart but he was a nice hero and I appreciated that he wasn’t displaying a ton of “alpha” maleness.

The Romance:

It’s your standard girl falls for boy with paranormal abilities/genetics.

When to Read the Novellas & Short Stories:

I never read any but I think the order listed on Goodreads would be accurate.

My Audiobook Experience:

The audio production was good. I think Galen’s chapters (in third person) could have been read with a different narrator or had Emma’s chapters (first person) start with “Emma” so that you know there is an apparent shift. I also thought Rayna’s voice really changed (and not just because of the plot) in Of Triton (#2). She seemed more childish than before, which in turn seemed slightly out of character.

Series Rating: 3/5

Of Poseiden 3/5 | Of Triton 3/5 | Of Neptune 3/5

overall

I think for young YA fans or YA fans who want to dip their toes into the world of the paranormal, this is a good started series for you. It has just enough going on to keep things interesting but there are a lot better reads out there.

Read if You Like: mermaids, paranormal romances
Avoid if You: want more plot twists, dislike YA

thoughts

Why I Picked it Up / My Expectations:

Non-contemporary New Adult reads are hard to find — or maybe I just look for them in the wrong places? Regardless, ever since I binged Blood Type and Vampire Royals last year, I’ve kept my eye out for anything remotely similar. That’s how I stumbled upon Rite of the Vampire when browsing my library’s audiobook collection.

I had read Haygert’s Playing Pretend years ago and enjoyed the straightforward story. The synopsis for The Vampire Heir was intriguing and the audiobook time was just over 5 hours so it seemed like it would be worth a shot!

The Concept / The World:

At first I thought this story was going to be strictly vampires but we meet Drake, our hero, after he returns from a battle with a werewolf pact. I thought the world here was a cool blend of all paranormal creatures. It kind of reminded my of Kelley Armstrong’s Otherworld Series for its blending of modern and paranormal.

The series itself is set in a universe that has other books published within it. So each series follows a specific set of leads but they all intermingle and crossover since it is set in the same world. That’s always fun, especially if you like to read series like I do. It’s nice to return sometimes to a familiar world and after completing this series, I’m really interested in the next one, The Rite of the Warlock!

The Plot:

Given the many paranormal creatures and the various hierarchies within their groups, I thought this story would be harder to follow but it wasn’t. However, I think it’s important for readers to know that it isn’t going to be a straightforward, only vampires story. Look elsewhere if you only want to read about vampires.

The Rite of the Vampire (#1) is pretty mellow, focusing more on the suspense for the first 3/4 of the book and then things change. It has a very different vibe than the rest of the series which is more action packed and lots of twists and turns. The overarching series plot is simple to follow but nevertheless entertaining.

The Characters:

I found both Thea and Drake to be super dry at the start of the series. They just seemed like cookie-cutter molds of lead characters but I think that was intentional given the setup of the first book and it’s suspenseful, mystery approach. As the series progresses, their characters evolve a bit more and break away from those stiff shells.

I also enjoyed the rest of the cast as well. Despite the many characters we meet, it was easy to remember everyone and get attached to some and hate others.

The Romance:

So I didn’t really like the romance in the first book; well, I should say that I didn’t like the way it materialized. It would have liked a little more tension, more “I hate you but I’m attracted to you” chemistry between Drake and Thea. It just seemed like they never interacted and then BAM, love. I just craved a little more from it especially when it’s a “I shouldn’t love you” type of relationship.

However, I did enjoy the romance as the series progressed. I thought there was a good balance between it, the plot and the character development we get from it.

My Audiobook Experience:

The audiobooks were a lot of fun. I liked that the annoying characters that you weren’t supposed to like had nasally voices and tones that suited their delivery. It was an easy series to listen to and I think I finished them super quickly because they weren’t very long. I felt like I was listening to a TV show which is always fun.

Series Rating: 3/5

The Vampire Heir 3/5 | The Witch Queen 3/5 | The Immortal Vow 3/5

overall

If you are looking for a quick but satisfying non-contemporary romance in the new adult genre, this is a great one for you to pick up!

thoughts

Why I Picked it Up / My Expectations:

I’ve only read one other series by K A Linde (Avoiding) and for me, it was a very refreshing series in the New Adult genre. So I was really curious to see what she could do with a non-contemporary romance. I love vampire stories and I’ve had great luck with other New Adult vampires reads in the past so this seemed like a win-win!

The Concept:

I work in transfusion science (blood typing and donations) so the scientist in me LOVED the approach this series took when it comes to blood and what vampires can/can’t drink. I thought it was so cool that vampires had to drink from the same blood type or else they get rabid: to me, that just makes sense because that’s the principle of blood transfusions!

The Plot:

I will admit, there didn’t seem to be much to the plot of Blood Type (Book #1). It’s focuses more on the romance and Reyna accepting her decision to give her blood to the vampires. I found it got to be a little too much back-and-forth with her feelings for Beckham since nothing else was really happening. But at the same time, we were getting a enough tidbits about what was on the horizon so it kept me invested (plus the romance was hot so I can’t really complain).

And those little tidbits are important for the rest of the series. Blood Match (#2) builds on those pieces and really creates a fast-paced follow-up that carries on right until the last book in the series (Blood Cure).

The Characters:

I enjoyed Reyna as a character. She’s a bit of a fish out of water and I think her reactions are exactly what mine would be if I was in her shoes. She’s got a big heart and I think that causes her to get walked over all the time; so I liked watching her shape her independence and stand up for herself. That being said, by the end of the series she seems to be that special snowflake more so and I got a little tired of it.

I had a different reaction towards Beckham. On one hand, the mystery surrounding his character had me hooked. There’s nothing I love more than an elusive male lead who only cracks every so often. On the other hand, I craved a little more from him–at least in the first book. Lacking his POV (while it helped add suspense to the plot and to his aurora as a bad boy) really had me craving for more depth into his character development. However, as the series progressed we do get to see that depth and dig a little more into his past.

The Romance:

Besides the physical chemistry between these two, I wasn’t entirely sold on Becks and Reyna at the start. I definitely understood why Reyna was drawn to Becks (he takes care of her, gives her her independence, etc). But I didn’t know why Becks liked Reyna all that much. I think the lack of his POV stopped me from understanding the draw besides the physical. Again, the more the series went on that more comfortable I grew with their story.

My Audiobook Experience:

I was a in a bit of a funk when I first started Blood Type but the audiobook quickly got me back into the reading mood. It’s very well done. It actually made me look forward to driving to work 😛 Sometimes I struggle with the third person audiobooks but I didn’t here.

Series Rating: 4/5

Blood Type 4/5 | Blood Match  4/5 | Blood Cure 4/5

This was a refreshing vampire read! I loved the concept and enjoyed the steamy romance and angst. Perfect for non-contemporary New Adult fans!
