Single Sundays: Every Other Day by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

Synopsis for Every Other Day (from Goodreads.com):
Every other day, Kali D’Angelo is a normal sixteen-year-old girl. She goes to public high school. She argues with her father. She’s human.

And then every day in between . . . she’s something else entirely.

Though she still looks like herself, every twenty-four hours predatory instincts take over and Kali becomes a feared demon-hunter with the undeniable urge to hunt, trap, and kill zombies, hellhounds, and other supernatural creatures. Kali has no idea why she is the way she is, but she gives in to instinct anyway. Even though the government considers it environmental terrorism.

When Kali notices a mark on the lower back of a popular girl at school, she knows instantly that the girl is marked for death by one of these creatures. Kali has twenty-four hours to save her, and unfortunately she’ll have to do it as a human. With the help of a few new friends, Kali takes a risk that her human body might not survive . . . and learns the secrets of her mysterious condition in the process.

Review:

When I start reading a book and I have a hard time grasping what is going on (and not in that good way of “unpredictable-always-twisting-plotlines” rather the writing style confusion boat), I know it isn’t going to end well for me. After reading this book, I did pick up the Raised by Wolves series by Ms Barnes and I could only make it through the first book. It didn’t grab my attention enough for me to want to read the next two books. It also confirmed to me that she has a unique writing style that takes me a little while to get “comfortable” with it.

The good news is that this book does get better and by the middle of it, I was into what was going on. The whole concept of the book is really neat and I liked the unravelling we get of what is happening to Kali. Kali was alright–I honestly don’t remember much else about her because it has been some time since I read the book. I think I warmed up to her by the end though.

Speaking of the ending–I have mixed feelings on it. It wraps up everything nicely which I appreciate, BUT I would love it even more if this was the start of a series. While a little lackluster, I think it sets up wonderfully for a series and I’m sad to hear that there aren’t any plans.

Conclusion:

This book is different from a lot of the Young Adult reads out there. While I would probably never read it again, it did capture my attention and I can appreciate the mystery surrounding the characters. I wouldn’t go out of my way to read it, but if you like Young Adult books with a darker supernatural twist, this book will probably be worth your time.
