Blog Tour: Cruel Money (Cruel #1) by K A Linde

Synopsis for Cruel Money (from Goodreads):

She was supposed to be a one night stand.

A way to sate my sexual appetite.

I let her glimpse the man I am. The face that I hide behind my carefully cultivated life. But she ripped open that divide—and there’s no going back.

Now, she’s here. In my city.

I don’t care that I’m Manhattan royalty and she’s the help.

Only that she’s living in my summer home. With me.

And I want more.

thoughts

Why I Picked it Up / My Expectations:

When I want a romance with a wicked twist along the way, K A Linde is my go to author. She never fails to surprise me when it comes to the drama of her romances. The romance is steamy and the drama is high–just what I like!

I was excited for this new series because it seemed like something I would love. Forbidden romance. NYC. Paris. I couldn’t wait to dive in!

What I Liked:

–Natalie–

I’ll be the first to say that I had to slowly warm up to Natalie a bit. I think her anger at the start made her seem abrupt and perhaps a little rude? But as the story progressed I really loved how she grew a backbone and become confident in herself. She doesn’t become this dependent heroine, rather she really does achieve independence so I was definitely on board with that!

–The Side Characters–

As I often am with these types of stories, I immediately got sucked into the lives of the side characters. I really hope we can elaborate more on their romances and shared histories in future novels.

Cruel Intentions meets Gossip Girl

Without a doubt, Cruel Intentions has one of my all time favourite romance tropes at the heart of it (playboy falls hard for his target) but I also adore (weird I know) the manipulation of the characters. Which is where the Gossip Girl comparisons come in. I associate the Upper East Side with high drama and backstabbing frenemies and a whole lot of angst. That’s all definitely here.

What I Didn’t Like:

–Wish-Washy Penn–

Don’t get me wrong, I had a major crush on Penn. He’s charming and everything I like in my playboy heroes so I was a fan. But I had the hardest time getting a read on him. Just when I think I had him figured out, he’d do something that just seemed out of character for me. I suppose part of that is the point of the story (you don’t really know his true intentions) but it just made his character lack some stability as a character (if you get what I’m saying).

–It Seemed a Little Tame?–

I came in expecting a lot of drama and I don’t think I got as much as I wanted. Sure, the story is super angsty and there is lots of Upper East Side Drama like you expect. But everything just seemed a little more toned down than I’m used to. But I could definitely sense that things were building by the end of the novel so I’m thinking bigger things are to come!

When to Read #0.5 One Cruel Night:

I would highly recommend that you read the novella before you read #1 Cruel Money. I found that novella really highlighted Natalie and Penn’s relationship and gave me a foundation that was lacking at the start of the novel for me when it comes to the romance. It gives you their history but doesn’t give any of the big secrets away either. Plus, the novella is super great; I wish it was longer!

My Expectations for the Rest of the Series:

Things are ramping up and I can’t wait to see how all this will unfold!

My Rating: 3.5/5

[One Cruel Night 4/5] | Cruel Money 3.5/5 | Cruel Fortune TBP | Cruel Legacy TBP

overall
This is perfect for fans of Cruel Intentions and angsty romance reads!

Read if You Like: Cruel Intentions, the Upper East Side
Avoid if You: dislike angsty, billionaire romances

Blog Tour: Royally Yours (Royally #4) by Emma Chase

Synopsis for Royally Yours (from Goodreads):

Princess Lenora Celeste Beatrice Arabella Pembrook had an unusual childhood. She was raised to be a Queen—the first Queen of Wessco.

It’s a big deal.

When she’s crowned at just nineteen, the beautiful young monarch is prepared to rule. She’s charming, clever, confident and cunning.

What she isn’t… is married.

It’s her advising council’s first priority. It’s what Parliament is demanding, and what her people want.

Lenora has no desire to tie herself to a man—particularly one who only wants her for her crown. But compromises must be made and royals must do their duty.

Even Queens. Especially them.

**

Years ago, Edward Langdon Richard Dorian Rourke, walked away from his title and country. Now he’s an adventurer—climbing mountains, exploring jungles, going wherever he wants, when he wants—until family devotion brings him home.

And a sacred promise keeps him there.

To Edward, the haughty, guarded little Queen is intriguing, infuriating…and utterly captivating. Wanting her just might drive him mad—or become his greatest adventure.

**

Within the cold, stone walls of the royal palace—mistrust threatens, wills clash, and an undeniable, passionate love will change the future of the monarchy forever.

Every dynasty has a beginning. Every legend starts with a story.

This is theirs.

thoughts

Why I Picked it Up / My Expectations:

If you read my review of the original trilogy, you know that I absolutely loved this series. I gave every book 5/5 and I plan on rereading them in the years to come. After devouring them all earlier this year, I made it my gold standard for contemporary romance. I just couldn’t get enough of these books!

So I was BEYOND EXCITED for Royally Yours. Getting that insight into such a formidable character like Queen Lenora? YES PLEASE!

What I Liked:

–I Cried–

Seems like a weird thing to like about a book but this book definitely brought out the emotions in me. Lenora’s story isn’t a lighthearted one: she’s gone through a lot. And I just thought it was amazing that I got so involved in her story and what happens in it.

And to be fair, I also laughed and swooned along the way as well.

–Fresh Plot–

I don’t read a lot of books set in the 1950s or 1960s so that was a refreshing setting to have. The culture–specifically the attitudes towards women–is so different from what we see today (well, in some ways). So it was intriguing to get the part of Lenora’s story and the struggles she faces when she becomes the first governing female monarch of her country.

–Great Character Development–

The first half of this novel definitely focuses more on Lenora but you need it to. Her experiences really set the stage for the rest of the story, and in particular Edward’s character development as well. I thought the second half of the novel focused more on Edward and his life. Which was awesome because it really helps to tie together their shared story when all is said and done.

What I Didn’t Like:

–The End Came Too Quickly–

I seriously could have read another 50 chapters on these two: they are just too perfect!

When to Read:

Honestly, you could read this book at any time. I think though you might get a little more out of it by reading it as the 4th book in the series because by then, you are super intrigued by Lenora’s story.

My Rating: 5/5

Royally Screwed 5/5 | Royally Matched 5/5 | [Royally Raised 5/5] | Royally Endowed 5/5 | Royally Yours 5/5

overall
This was EXACTLY what I wanted from this novel! Just a solid romance with great characters and a fabulous story!

Read if You Like: romances involving royals, humour
Avoid if You: don’t enjoy romance novels

Blog Tour: Strong (Stage Dive #4.5) by Kylie Scott

Synopsis for Strong (from Goodreads):

When the girl of your dreams is kind of a nightmare.

As head of security to Stage Dive, one of the biggest rock bands in the world, Sam Knowles has plenty of experience dealing with trouble. But spoilt brat Martha Nicholson just might be the worst thing he’s ever encountered. The beautiful troublemaker claims to have reformed, but Sam knows better than to think with what’s in his pants. Unfortunately, it’s not so easy to make his heart fall into line.

Martha’s had her sights on the seriously built bodyguard for years. Quiet and conservative, he’s not even remotely her type. So why the hell can’t she get him out of her mind? There’s more to her than the Louboutin wearing party-girl of previous years, however. Maybe it’s time to let him in on that fact and deal with this thing between them.

**Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new readers, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope you’ll enjoy each one as much as we do.**

thoughts

Why I Picked it Up / My Expectations:

When I finished the last book in the Stage Dive Series (Deep), I needed to know immediately if Martha was getting her own book. So I was really excited when I saw that something was in the works for Martha and Sam! I had so many questions and I couldn’t wait to see if they would fall in love.

The Plot:

I found that the first half of this book was dedicated to getting to know Martha, which was a good thing. If you have any experience at all with the Stage Dive Series, you probably have a less than favourable impression of Martha. But that’s why I love stories like these because you get to see that character in another–hopefully more positive–light. And that’s what this story succeeded in doing. My thoughts on Martha definitely evolved by the end of this novella.

The latter half of the novel is more about Martha and Sam navigating their budding relationship and I found was where the story really grabbed my attention. They have an interesting relationship and I enjoyed the banter between them.

Of course, I always want more out of a novella but I’m more than satisfied with how Martha’s story is delivered in this instalment.

The Characters:

Like I said above Martha was a character I didn’t necessarily like but she won me over by the end. She had some great character development and it was nice seeing her grow as a person and leave that nasty persona she had behind.

The Romance:

I would have liked to have seen these two interact a little more at the start (they seemed to jump into their relationship) but given the length of the story I understand. I really do like these two as a pair–they balance each other out and even if it wasn’t said outright, I got why they were drawn to each other.

Can it be read as a Standalone?

For sure! While I think you might get more out of Martha and Sam’s relationship by getting some of the context Deep (Stage Dive #4) provides, this novella would serve as a great introduction to the Stage Dive world and will leave you more than curious about the other characters.

Rating for Strong: 3/5

overall
I love it when a character surprises you and that’s exactly what this novella did for me!
