Why I Picked it Up / My Expectations:

I had no idea what to expect for this finale but I knew I wanted some great twists, fireworks and perhaps a happy ending? I was excited for the ride.

The Plot:

Again, this story had a slow build to it but the climb is worth the climax. There’s this air of unknown happening throughout the novel and it kept me hooked as I read. Natalie’s story is intriguing and she’s had some great growth so it was interesting to see it all come together in this finale.

The Characters:

I have to give some major props to K A Linde’s ability to ground all the characters in this story. I’ve compared it to Gossip Girl in the past but there is something distinctly different about this series and I think it’s the humanity of the characters. Yes, they live in this life of privilege and excess but somehow Linde has been able to make them seem like everyday people by grounding them through their actions and monologues. It isn’t only Natalie who has evolved as a character but its the entire Crew that has as well.

I AM HOPING SO HARD that Katherine will get her own book. Her character fascinated me throughout the series and we get some interesting developments in her story that have me hoping she will get one. I am excited for the spin-off The Lying Season even if it isn’t Katherine who is the focus.

The Romance:

It’s hard to say too much without spoilers but I was satisfied with this for sure.

Blog Tour: Slay: Rivalry by Laurelin Paige

Synopsis for Slay: Rivalry (from Goodreads):
Edward Fasbender is a devil.

He’s my father’s business rival, a powerful, vicious man who takes what he wants and bows to no one. I only took the meeting because I was curious. I thought he was going to offer me a job.

But that’s not what he’s after at all. His proposal is much more intriguing, and I see an opportunity. An opportunity to turn the tables and bring down the devil.

I’ve gotten in trouble playing these games before. I know when the risk is too great, when the stakes are too high. I know how to be cold and strong-willed and destructive. I know how to withstand dominant men with arrogant charm and rugged features.

Yet I can’t resist taking on Edward.

And I can’t resist the pull he has on me.

Soon I’m not so sure which side of the battle I’m standing on–if I’m the warrior meant to slay,

Or the one who will be slain.

thoughts

Why I Picked it Up / My Expectations:

I’m a HUGE Laurelin Paige fan. She writes one of my all time favourite contemporary romance series, Fixed. That’s the series I recommend to everyone who wants a delicious contemporary romance read with a hint of drama.

I’ve been dying for more insight into Celia as a character since the moment we met her in the Fixed Series. She’s fascinating as a character and her storyline later in the series is definitely intriguing. So I was eager to dive in to this.

The Plot:

The beautiful thing about all the spin-offs that Paige writes is that you don’t need to read the previous series to get what is happening. Yes, it helps to know what the allusions mean but you can definitely get by without knowing the full details. But each characters’ story is isolated to their own novels.

As some who has read all the previous novels, it was neat to see how this story fits in with the timelines and put some of the pieces together. And even though I somewhat know what happens with their story, Laurelin Paige is still able to deliver this air of the anticipation. After all, I may know some of the outcome of their relationship, but the journey itself is completely unknown!

And what a journey it is! This book had me hooked from the start! I loved this game of cat and mouse between Edward and Celia. Add to that their explosive chemistry and you’re in for a ride.

The Characters:

As I said before, Celia is one of those characters that I’ve been dying to know more about ever since she was introduced. I was so excited when it was announced she was getting her own series.

There’s just something about getting into a character’s head after only seeing them through the filter of other characters. To get her inner monologue now helps me understand her motivations and actions in a completely new way.

As for Edward—it’s funny but I always pictured him as this really old man from the first series. Probably because he is rivals with Celia’s dad. But oh boy! I’ve seen him in a completely new light and me-likey! He’s everything I want in a darker alpha lead. He’s got this air of mystery and authority but he has these moments of vulnerability that charm me every time.

The Romance:

The tension is palpable between these two! I love enemies to lovers stories because the rivalry just amps every thing up, including the romance.

My Expectations for the Rest of the Series:

Is the sequel here yet? I’m feeling a little book-hangover here…

My Rating: 5/5

thoughts

Why I Picked it Up / My Expectations:

I’m always eager for a new Ilsa Madden-Mills New Adult read but when I saw that her newest book featured two of my favourite tropes–hockey player and a fake relationship premise–I knew that this was going to be a read-ASAP type of book.

The Plot:

I thought that this book would be a little lighter than it was but I liked the tone it had. Both of our leads have their own struggles and I enjoyed watching them deal with them as they navigated their budding feelings.

In particular, I really appreciated and admired Zack’s mental health storyline. Anxiety in sports (not simply the pressure of doing the sport but how one’s personal mental health affects their playing) isn’t something I’ve really come across in the genre before. I loved how it was dealt with here and how it was one of the main focuses and not something mentioned in passing.

The Characters:

Like I said before, Zack and Sugar have their own issues which make them layered characters. I thought Zack had the strongest character story but Sugar definitely evolves as well throughout the story. It was great to see her come outside her comfort zone.

The Romance:

For me, I didn’t see the chemistry between these two right away. Zack borders on some insta-love I thought in the first bit and I wasn’t entirely convinced why. But by the mid-way point we watch them talk and share a little more so it helped me to see why they were a good pair. This is one of those times where the various dramatic stressors they undergo helped to cement why they work as partners.

Why I’m SO EXCITED There is a Sequel:

I LOVED some of the various side characters we met and there was an inkling of something between two particular characters that I can’t wait to get the full story on!

My Rating: 3.5/5

thoughts

Why I Picked it Up / My Expectations:

I finished Cruel Money with the inkling that not everything came to the light. Plus, there was that ending that had me eager to see what was next for Natalie’s journey.

The Plot:

For me, this book didn’t seem like your everyday “middle of the trilogy novel”. It takes a different approach that you don’t often see in a trilogy that follows the same leads and I found that to be very refreshing. It’s hard to fully explain without revealing the main plot…

I will say that the start was a little dry for me. We perhaps get caught up a little too much in the mundane of Natalie’s life. However, that underlying feeling that there was something else at play lurked just beneath the surface and kept me reading.

The Characters:

One of the highlights for me in the first novel was Natalie’s character evolution and how she really came into herself. But here, that Natalie gets challenged from all sides and I found it interesting to see how she would weather the Upper East Side storm.

The Romance:

Again, this was refreshing for a romance trilogy that focuses on the same leads.

My Expectations for the Rest of the Series:

I can’t wait to see how all the dust settles!

thoughts

Why I Picked it Up / My Expectations:

I read Chantal’s novel The Songs in Our Hearts a few years ago and really enjoyed it (it was super cute!). So when I saw that there was an opportunity to read a non-contemporary (MERMAIDS!!!!) novel by her, I couldn’t wait to see what she could do in a different genre.

What I Liked:

–The Romance–

This surprised me in a really good way. I thought I had a good idea of where the romance would be going early on but I was so dead wrong. I love when that happens!

It isn’t a huge focus but it’s there enough to keep the story going when it needs too.

–Lena’s Character Growth–

Lena’s character story is literally one of “fish out of the water” but it provides an interesting backdrop to her character growth and development. This is very much a coming of age story for her except she has the added complications of being a mermaid now on land. I enjoyed her evolution from naive mermaid to independent young lady.

What I Didn’t Like:

–More Drama–

Like most coming of age stories, I find you kinda go through the everyday motions of life so it can become a little monotonous. But let me be clear that I never got bored with this story! It has a great flow to it and you get these little inklings of the bigger story to come along the way so it builds as you read. What I’m trying to say is that I wish the “whoa!” moment came a touch earlier so we could get into it a little more…but I guess that’s what sequels are for 😉

My Audiobook Experience:

This was such a fabulous audio listen! Right when it started to play I was fully immersed into the story and the characters. The narrator here is Dollcie Webb and she does a great job of giving all the characters their own voices so it is super easy to follow along. She has the perfect cadence for an audiobook narrator–seriously, it was such a nice read to listen to that I was finished the novel before I knew it!

My Expectations for the Rest of the Series:

This book had a few surprises at that end that has me eager to see what will happen next!

My Rating: 3.5/5

thoughts

**This post was originally published as a Blog Tour Stop review of the first book of the series. It has now been updated to include the newest publications in the series.**

Why I Picked it Up / My Expectations:

When I want a romance with a wicked twist along the way, K A Linde is my go to author. She never fails to surprise me when it comes to the drama of her romances. The romance is steamy and the drama is high–just what I like!

I was excited for this new series because it seemed like something I would love. Forbidden romance. NYC. Paris. I couldn’t wait to dive in!

What I Liked:

–Natalie–

I’ll be the first to say that I had to slowly warm up to Natalie a bit. I think her anger at the start made her seem abrupt and perhaps a little rude? But as the story progressed I really loved how she grew a backbone and become confident in herself. She doesn’t become this dependent heroine, rather she really does achieve independence so I was definitely on board with that!

–The Side Characters–

As I often am with these types of stories, I immediately got sucked into the lives of the side characters. I really hope we can elaborate more on their romances and shared histories in future novels.

Cruel Intentions meets Gossip Girl

Without a doubt, Cruel Intentions has one of my all time favourite romance tropes at the heart of it (playboy falls hard for his target) but I also adore (weird I know) the manipulation of the characters. Which is where the Gossip Girl comparisons come in. I associate the Upper East Side with high drama and backstabbing frenemies and a whole lot of angst. That’s all definitely here.

What I Didn’t Like:

–Wish-Washy Penn–

Don’t get me wrong, I had a major crush on Penn. He’s charming and everything I like in my playboy heroes so I was a fan. But I had the hardest time getting a read on him. Just when I think I had him figured out, he’d do something that just seemed out of character for me. I suppose part of that is the point of the story (you don’t really know his true intentions) but it just made his character lack some stability as a character (if you get what I’m saying).

–It Seemed a Little Tame?–

I came in expecting a lot of drama and I don’t think I got as much as I wanted. Sure, the story is super angsty and there is lots of Upper East Side Drama like you expect. But everything just seemed a little more toned down than I’m used to. But I could definitely sense that things were building by the end of the novel so I’m thinking bigger things are to come!

When to Read #0.5 One Cruel Night:

I would highly recommend that you read the novella before you read #1 Cruel Money. I found that novella really highlighted Natalie and Penn’s relationship and gave me a foundation that was lacking at the start of the novel for me when it comes to the romance. It gives you their history but doesn’t give any of the big secrets away either. Plus, the novella is super great; I wish it was longer!

My Expectations for the Rest of the Series:

Things are ramping up and I can’t wait to see how all this will unfold!

How it Crosses Over with the Wright Brothers Series:

My understanding since that is one of the few K A Linde series I haven’t read (yet), that Penn and Katherine are featured as the friends of the leads in that series. You can definitely read one series without the other.

thoughts

Why I Picked it Up / My Expectations:

I’ve really enjoyed the last two novels in the series but I had a special curiosity for Jonas’ story. He’s been such an enigma throughout the series that I couldn’t wait to learn more about him and how he ends up with a character we met in the first novel, Hadley.

What I Liked:

–Very Character Driven Story–

While there are plenty of steamy moments between these two, there wasn’t only those moments. Both our leads have their flaws and seem to be in ruts when it comes to their lives. So it was great to see both of them work on their individual selves throughout the novel and grow. These two talk a lot and about a variety of things so I felt like a had a great grasp on who they are as people and why they’ve been holding back in their lives.

–Slightly Forbidden Romance–

This is a little twofold in some ways. First, it’s the fact that Hadley is  BFFS with Jonas’ brother’s wife and they hook up for the first time at the wedding…and don’t want anyone to know.

But then comes the working element of their relationship where Jonas becomes her client. I really liked how this added to their relationship, taking it to that next level of development. It was a great plot device and one that really enhanced the story the more you read.

What I Didn’t Like:

–Missing a Little Je Ne Sais Quoi

I don’t know how to describe what was missing from this book for me (ie why it isn’t a 5 star read).

I had worried that the nature of their relationship (life coach and client) would lead down a very unhealthy one but that wasn’t the case at all (I was really impressed by how that all unfolded and was dealt with). So that wasn’t it.

I think it might have been the pacing a bit? It just seemed a little off in places when I think back about the novel as a whole.

My Rating: 4/5

A great way to wrap up this fabulous series!

Blog Tour: Illusions by Madeline J Reynolds

Synopsis for Illusions (from Entangled Teen):

Dear Thomas,

I know you’re angry. It’s true, I was sent to expose your mentor as a fraud illusionist, and instead I have put your secret in jeopardy. I fear I have even put your life in jeopardy. For that I can only beg your forgiveness. I’ve fallen for you. You know I have. And I never wanted to create a rift between us, but if it means protecting you from those who wish you dead—I’ll do it. I’ll do anything to keep you safe, whatever the sacrifice. Please forgive me for all I’ve done and what I’m about to do next. I promise, it’s one magic trick no one will ever see coming.

Love,
Saverio

thoughts

Why I Picked it Up / My Expectations:

I was drawn to this title for a number of reasons. The first is its historical setting–I love a good Victorian Era YA novel. The second is the gay romance between the leads–I haven’t read too many books set in this era with that romance. And the third is the premise itself–who doesn’t love some good magician sabotage?

The Plot:

This book took me awhile to get into probably because it is told through (primarily) journal entries and that delivers the story in a different way. You focus more on the characters, their feelings and daily events more so than the setting or interactions with other characters. In a sense, you are getting the story secondhand story because they are describing what has happened without you experiencing it first hand. But once I got into the groove of the POV format, the story was easy to read.

I, personally, would have enjoyed a more amped up rivalry between the two master magicians; with more sabotage. Instead, the focus remains on the two apprentices creating a very character driven story that is still very enjoyable to read because there is some great character growth (in addition to the very sweet romance).

The Characters:

It was amazing to watch these two transform before my eyes as the story progressed. The Thomas and Saverio we get at the start of the novel definitely aren’t the same boys we end the story with. I just loved the personal growth we see in these characters. I think the journal entries provided that touch of intimacy into these characters’ emotions and inner thoughts that really adds to the characters’ many layers.

The Romance:

These two were simply adorable together! I always enjoy romances that don’t start out with the nicest intentions, yet twist into something real and strong. When the plot isn’t focusing on them as individuals, I like how it concentrated on how they navigate their relationship given the various circumstances (their rivalry, the nature of their relationship in society, etc.). I also appreciated how it took the time to tackle them realistically; nothing ever felt rushed in that sense (and that isn’t always the case).

My Rating: 3/5

overall
Despite a slower start, this is a great read for fans of character driven historical YA reads!

Read if You Like: historical, stories told through journal entries
Avoid if You: want more than romance

Why I Picked it Up / My Expectations:

After such a strong start in this series, I couldn’t wait to get Jake’s story! I love it when our hero is hopelessly in love with the heroine…but she doesn’t really know it yet. There’s just something about the tension it brings that sucks me in.

What I Liked:

–The Friends to More Relationship–

I loved that these two had already established a friendship before the book started. They are great friends who support each other and just have a really solid relationship. And that translates well in the first few chapters of the book. I was able to see their great connection–not simply be told it existed–and that set up a great foundation for the rest of the story; especially when the romance begins to develop.

–Jake Will Make You Swoon–

Jake is everything you want in a romance hero. He’s sweet (seriously, he says the nicest things about Marlee), confident but not overbearing and ridiculously sexy as a result. By the end of the first chapter, he had completely won over. It doesn’t hurt that he is hopelessly in love with Marlee either–there is just something so attractive about that!

What I Didn’t Like:

–Marlee’s Reason for Getting Jake’s Help With Romance–

I don’t want to give too much away but I think it’s fairly obvious early on what type of situation Marlee finds herself in and why she needs Jake’s help. Regardless, I just wish the ramifications of her situation was elaborated on a little more; especially in the current climate we are in socially. Marlee gives a somewhat valid reason for her decision but it just gave me a bad taste in my mouth and one that stayed throughout the novel.

My Expectations for the Rest of the Series:

I cannot wait to get the last story! Jonas has been such an enigma that I’m super excited to learn more about him!

My Rating: 4/5

Simply put, this is just another really great contemporary romance novel–this series is fantastic!

Sexy Athlete: I bet you…
Penelope Graham: Burn in hell, quarterback.

The text is random but Penelope figures out exactly who “Sexy Athlete” is. And why she shouldn’t take his wager.

Ryker Voss.

Just ask him.

His bet? He promises Penelope he’ll win her the heart of the guy she’s been crushing on. His plan—good old-fashioned jealousy. Once her crush sees her kissing Ryker, he’ll realize what he’s missing. Sounds legit, right? The only question is…why is Ryker being so nice to her?

Penelope Graham.

His mortal enemy.

Penelope knows she shouldn’t trust a jock, but what’s a girl to do when she needs a date to Homecoming? And Ryker’s keeping a secret, another bet, one that could destroy Penelope’s heart forever.

Catch my review of book #1 of The Hook-Up, I Dare You, Here!

Why I Picked it Up / My Expectations:

The first book in this series, I Dare You, was such a great read! It just had this great blend of characters, romance and story and I couldn’t wait to delve back into this world Madden-Mills has expertly crafted!

What I Liked:

–Their Chemistry–

These two just had instant, palpable chemistry from the get-go. The result is wickedly entertaining banter and swoon-worthy moments that will have you as a puddle on the floor. They were such a great match and the tension between them as they tried to figure that out–addicting!

–The Tropes Used–

Penelope and Ryker have this whole hate-to-love you vibe going on at the start of the book that I love so much. It really sets the tone for their entire relationship and romance. Add to that the betting aspect (which was rather refreshing because of Ryker’s approach isn’t one we often see with heroes with that particular set-up); the “I’ll help you get the guy you want” scenario and the player/virgin trope and you’ve got a very entertaining read on your hands.

–The Evolution of Their Relationship–

I just loved how these two got to know each other as people so much! Their communication was fabulous! Most of this book is spent watching these two talk to each other about anything and everything and I totally fell in love with them as a couple because of that.

What I Didn’t:

–Lack of Ryker’s POV–

Don’t get me wrong, Ryker is a swoon-worthy book hero who you will no doubt love. He had me swooning from the get-go.

It’s slightly ironic that in my review of I Dare You, one of my chief complaints was the fact that having Maverick’s POV and knowing his secrets dampened the dramatic element of the plot; whereas in this book, I feel like I didn’t get enough of Ryker’s POV to get a solid read on his character. His development to me was slightly stifled as a result.

My Expectations for the Rest of the Series:

I really hope Charisma gets her own story–she is quite the character!

My Rating: 4/5

I Dare You 4/5 | I Bet You 4/5

overall
A super cute romance that you will no doubt devour in one sitting!
