Awards: Blogger Recognition

book

I was nominated a longggg time ago by Sydney @ Books and Stuff. Thank you very much for the nomination! I have a ton of  fun reading your blog and talking to you about so many different things over the last few months! And I was nominated more recently by meena @ Tattooed Pages.  Thank you very much meena! She has a fantastic blog complete with a great explaination of how she rates her books (that *facepalm* one slays me!). Check both of these lovely ladies out when you get a chance!

The original award was created by Eve @ Edge of Night. It was created to celebrate bloggers in the blogosphere and to spread the love!

How did seriesous reviews start?

I can vividly remember the moment I finished Requiem by Lauren Oliver and how severely disappointed I was in the finale. I had been following the series since it started (approximately 3 years) and felt like I had wasted so much time on a series that ultimately let me down.

Around this time, I was also thinking about writing reviews for all the books I was reading. I thought about just reviewing things on Goodreads but I’ve always loved HTML design and graphics and thought it would be fun to do that on my own website.

Most blogs have a niche and I’m a pretty versatile reader if I do say so myself, so I wasn’t sure what my “niche” should be. But finishing Requiem on such a bad note got me thinking, what if people reviewed all the books in a series and told you if the entire series was worth reading in the first place. Before you picked up that first book and dedicated your time to reading all the books in the series. Of course, this works well for series that have had all the books (or at least most of them) published but not so much for the brand new series. And what about standalone books? I read those too!

And so I had my blog breakdown: Single Sundays (standalone reviews), Series Reviews, and Fresh Fridays (brand new series reviews). Add to it Movie Mondays (book adaptations) and Toonie Tuesday (an homage to the $2 coin in Canada) and I had a whole wack of reviews to write!

My Advice to New Bloggers?

Try a little bit of everything! Don’t be afraid to try out new features and don’t be afraid to stop them when you aren’t inspired by them any more! I think lots of people get stuck into a rut where they feel compelled to continue a feature despite finding it to be tedious to do.

Don’t worry about your blog stats! Easier said than done, I know, but as long as you enjoy doing what you are doing, the statistics you want will come in time.

Comment on other people’s blogs and respond to comments on your own! I was really bad at this when my blog first started and I feel like I did myself (and my blog) a disservice by not connecting with all these really cool people. If you want comments on your own blog, you need to show interest in others. The blogosphere is a really nice place and the people love to talk books, etc. and are more than willing to comment on your own blog when you comment on theirs.

You need to follow others in order to get followers on your own blog. It might seem intuitive but sometimes I think we just expect people to pop up out of nowhere just because we hit a publish button. Again, I didn’t follow many any blogs during my first year of blogging and I feel like know I missed out on making great connections with so many amazing people.

Final Award?

I have decided to make my blog Award Free starting now. I’m not really good at tagging people due to a lack of time (school has officially started back up again) and I don’t want to be that person who kills the spreading of blogger lover and appreciation. I’m going to be tagging people over the next few weeks for the various awards I have to catch up on.

I thank you all for the consideration with your nominations and send you all the love back in the world.

 Rules:
  1. Select 15 other blogs to give the award to. You might have to do some searching, but you can find those blogs. You can’t nominate yourself or the person who nominated you.
  2. Make a post to show off your award! Talk about how your blog got started and give some advice to the other bloggers out there. And share the fancy picture!
  3. Comment on each blog to let the blogger know that you have nominated them.

Awards: Real Neat Blog Award

book

Thank you to Yoyo @ willyoutalknerdytome for the The Real Neat Blog Award nomination. I know you nominated me forever ago and I apologize for taking so long! I have so much fun reading your blog and just want to let you know that I will talk nerdy with you any day of the week 😉 I can’t wait to read more of your future posts and wish you and your blog all the best!!!

7 Questions:

1. If you can chose to be friends with any superhero, who would it be?

This is super tough! I am a huge super hero fan! Any of the X-men would be sick (Storm or Rogue or Gambit would be my ideals…oh and Wolverine of course!). I also would love to meet The Flash and The Arrow…especially on their TV show.

2. What is in your bag/purse/backpack/book bag?

Too many things in my purse. I have lip chap, lotion, my rain jacket (it’s a pocket folding one that’s how), my Kobo, glasses cleaner and a pen. Plus random things I probably don’t even know are in there.

3. If you only have 1 year to live, how would you spend your last year?

It’s your typical cliche answer of travel. I would also spend time with family and friends.

4.If you could only stop one of these event: racism, sexism, rape, body-shaming, homophobia. Which one would you pick and why? (I hope this make sense. I thought of this in the shower so…)

This one is super tough! I really can’t pick all of them!?

I think sexism because it also helps stop body-shaming. It kills me that we (as in North America where I live) is so technologically advanced yet we still have such stereotypes for men and women, lower pay for women and feel like we can dictate what people can and can’t do to their bodies based on their sex. Drives me nuts!

5. Do you believe in horoscope and what is your sign?

I don’t believe in horoscopes in the sense that they predict the future. I believe that people see the connections that they want to see when they read it. But, I definitely like to read mine for fun 😉

6. Current Read and Last Read

I’m currently reading Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo. The last book I read was Bad Reputation by K.B. Nelson.

7. What you want to study in Uni/ College?

I finished my undergraduate degree in Biomedical Science (but I had an English Minor ;)) and I am currently in school studying Medical Laboratory Science.

Awards: Sisterhood of the World of Bloggers

One of my new resolutions for 2015 in terms of my blog to is to actually do something about the awards I have been nominated for by some awesome bloggers. I always read the comments and smile that someone has taken the time to nominate me for something but I always forget to complete the necessary parts of the award. So, I would like to apologize for the very late response to each and every one of you! It truly means a lot to me that you have nominated me for an award and I feel awful that I ignored your kindness until now. This year I am going to try and change that by completing these nominations over the next month!
book

Thank you to Book Junkiez for the nomination for The Sisterhood of the World Bloggers Award. You have nominated me for so many awards and I truly thank you for following my blog! I wish you all the best with your blog in the future!

My Answers to the Questions:

1. Where is your favorite place to read?

My Bed.

2. If you could meet any author, who would that be?

J.R.R.Tolkien. I would love to pick his brain about his writing process and Middle Earth.

3. If you were stranded on a deserted island, what 2 books would you like to have with you?

The Book of Awesome to keep my positive. And a book that would help me escape 😛 Haha no in all seriousness, I would pick the Perks of Being a Wallflower because it’s my favourite novel and makes me laugh.

4. Where is your favorite place to take a vacation?

Disney World.

5. Why did you start blogging?

I started with posting reviews on Goodreads and realized that a blog that focused on series reviews was needed. The idea actually occurred to me after finishing Lauren Oliver’s Delirium Series. This was a series that started out alright, lulled and then completely dropped the ball in the final book. If I had known that the ending would have left me completely unsatisfied I would have never picked up the series*. But I thought to myself: I wish someone had written a review of the whole series to tell me how awful it became*, because if they had, I would have never picked up the series in the first place. Three other factors pushed me: the fact that I hate spoilers in my reviews (and lots of people write reviews where they summary the entire book; especially on Goodreads); I was tired of reading reviews filled with gifs and pictures (again, extremely common on Goodreads); and I felt that there was a need to have book mini synopses for series that had long publication times between books. That last one especially because I got to the point in my reading where I was reading so many books throughout a year that I would forget what happened in the previous book. So I ended up starting a word doc where I summarized the key plot points of each previous book to jog my memory before I started the next one.

*To be fair to the Delirium Series, I started it as soon as the books were published and subsequently followed the series as it was published so there was no way someone could have told me how unsatisfying the finale would be.

6. What is your favorite thing about blogging?

Writing reviews, especially about new series, reminds me of how I was feeling when I read those books and I often reread my posts before starting that series’ sequels or starting another series by that author. It makes a nice reference point for me personally because I have such an awful memory and I read so many books that they all blur together.

7 . Who influenced you the most growing up?

My parents and my family, for sure. Also Walter Disney (might seem like an odd choice but I love the vision he had for the Walt Disney Company and everything that has transpired from such an idea).

8) What was your favorite book as a child?

The only novel I really remember rereading was Jayden’s Rescue by Vladimir Tumanov. I also read a lot of Franklin, Arthur and Hopper books as a kid so those are on my list too.

9) Do you have a preferred genre that you like to read?

Right now, it’s New Adult hands down. I just love the great blend of drama and romance

10) If you could be any character from a book, who would you be?

Magnus Bane from the Mortal Instrument Series because he seems like he has such an interesting life. Plus he has some pretty kick ass magic that might come in handy.

11 Questions from those who nominated me:

Instead of answering 4 groups of 11 questions, I just did 3 questions from each blog that nominated me…

From The Quintessential Bibliophile:

1) Why did you start this blog?

I started this blog because I was really tired of starting a series, loving the first book and then being supremely disappointed in the conclusion. If I had known how awful the rest of the series was, I would have never picked up the first book in the first place so I decided why not review SERIES instead of the individual books of the series? That way, I would save people time and my blog would have that unique flare to it.

2) Any 3 strange reading habits?

Yes!
I always stop reading between chapters. If I am in the middle of the chapter, I won’t stop reading until I finish it!
I’ve reached the point where I prefer reading on my eReader vs a normal book which is a little blasphemous in some circles 😛
I usually spend my Saturday mornings in bed where I start and finish a book in one sitting.

3) Divergent or The Hunger Games?

A great question and one that isn’t asked as much as I think it is. I have to say The Hunger Games. I feel like the series has stronger individual books than Divergent which had slower sequel books to me.

***

From Book Gossips:

4)What made you create a Blog?

Besides the fact that I wanted to create a blog devoted to series reviews, I have always enjoyed writing. Since I was a kid, I would create stories and my dream job would be as a novelist. I’m also the person in my group of friends that people ask for book recommendations and because I do read a crap ton of books, I decided I should share my insights into books but with my own little spin on it all.

5) If you could travel to any city in the world, where would you go and why?

I really want to go to Tokyo, Japan. I watched a lot of anime as a teen and I just love Japanese culture. It seems like a city that is vastly different than any city that we have here in Canada/North America so I would love to experience it!

6) What is your Favourite Movie?

This is a tough one. I have three favourite Disney movies: Aladdin, Mulan and Hercules but I don’t know which one is my top.

***

From Written Word Worlds:

7) If you were stranded on a desert island with one book character, who would it be?

Easy: Katniss because she is a great hunter. Plus, she and I would get along great I think. She is one character I never got annoyed with when I was reading.

8) Would you rather be a tribute for the Hunger Games, go through Dauntless initiation or live the life of a Shadowhunter?

WOW, I don’t know how to answer this. Although meeting Four through the Dauntless initiation would be fantastic (<3), I would want to be a Shadowhunter. I love the Mortal Instrument series and I feel like Magnus Bane and I would be besties if we ever met.

9) What is your favourite book to movie adaptation?

I’m going to go with a retro pick: The Princess Bride. Loved the book, but I think I love the movie more. It’s just so well done and I still quote it all the time. I have yet to meet someone who doesn’t love this movie.

***

From Book Junkies:

10) What is your least favorite aspect of blogging?

Rereading my posts and realizing I had awful grammar or really bad typos. I try my best to edit my posts before I officially post them but because I am often writing my reviews in different stages (because I am reviewing multiple books for one post), what I was writing yesterday isn’t what I am writing today or my views have changed so things can get a little messy. I cringe when I read my mistakes because I feel like I should have known better!

11) What was your favorite book as a child?

The only novel I really remember rereading was Jayden’s Rescue by Vladimir Tumanov. I also read a lot of Franklin, Arthur and Hopper (such beautiful illustrations) books as a kid so those are on my list too.

12) What is your favorite genre to read?

Right now, it’s New Adult hands down. I just love the great blend of drama and romance.
